Periodontia

WHAT IS PERIODONTOLOGY?

Periodontology is the dental specialty that focuses on the prevention and
treatment of inflammatory and infectious diseases related to the dental support and implantation system, known as the periodontium. Pathological changes in the periodontium are called periodontal diseases, with gingivitis and periodontitis being the most common forms.

RISK FACTORS FOR PERIODONTAL DISEASE:

* Smoking;
* Diabetes;
* Stress;
* Obesity;
* Osteoporosis;
* Hormonal disorders.

WHY UNDERGO PERIODONTAL TREATMENT?

* Removal of bacterial biofilm and dental calculus;
* Reduction of oral infection;
* Health of oral tissues;
* Treatment of the inflammatory/infectious process;
* Control of suppuration and gum bleeding.

WHAT IS THE PERIODONTAL TREATMENT LIKE?

Periodontal treatment should be individualized to each patient. It generally includes reeducation about oral hygiene habits, manual or ultrasonic scaling sessions and, in some cases, surgical procedures. All with the aim of restoring the health of the gum tissues and controlling the disease.

WHAT IS THE RISK OF NOT UNDERGOING PERIODONTAL TREATMENT?

* Tooth loss;
* Loss of alveolar bone and subsequent difficulty in future prosthetic treatments;
* Infections through bacteremia;
* Aesthetic damage to the smile: elongated teeth and open spaces (diastemas);
* Bad breath;
* Harm to systemic health, such as difficulty in controlling diabetes.

AESTHETICS IN PERIODONTOLOGY

Within this specialty, there is also a focus on the aesthetics of gum tissues. In the composition of a beautiful smile, the gums play a crucial role, commonly referred to as Red Aesthetics.

Gum Recession
Often, you may notice that the gums have receded or “pulled up” in specific areas, leading to the exposure of the root portion of the tooth. This can result not only in an aesthetic detriment but also in episodes of sensitivity to daily stimuli such as cold, heat and to the consumption of sweet or acidic foods. Thus, through periodontal surgical procedures, it is possible to cover this exposed root, restoring aesthetic satisfaction and comfort to the patient.

Gummy Smile
Often due to genetic factors or after long periods of fixed orthodontic appliance use, disproportionate gum growth is observed, especially in the anterior region, which can lead to not only aesthetic dissatisfaction but also difficulty in maintaining an adequate oral hygiene standard.

To address situations like these, there are periodontal surgical procedures, such as gingivoplasty, which allows for the removal of this excess gum tissue, promoting a harmonious smile compatible with periodontal health.
